
Atmospheric Icing Product (AIP3)
AeroTex is developing an in-flight ice detection system called the Atmospheric Icing Product or AIP3. The system has the capability to;
detect icing, determine the icing severity and differentiate between conventional small droplet icing and Supercooled Large Droplets (SLDs)
The system has three components;
Atmospheric Icing Patch (AIPatch),
Atmospheric Icing Probe (AIProbe), and
Atmospheric Icing Processor (AIProcessor)
The system was developed under the Horizon 2020 SENS4ICE project, before being further matured under the NATEP funded project RAIDS.

AIP3 provides a low power, tailorable solutions that allows the pilot to not only detect icing but also to identify the potential hazard those conditions present. The system can be adapted for a range of platforms, from drones to commercial aircraft. Initial functionality focusses on delivering severity detection for fixed wing drones, and SLD differentiation on larger platforms.

Icing Wind Tunnel Testing
The AIP3 has been subject to testing across a range of facilities including NRC, RTA, Cranfield and TUBS. This testing provides confidence in the robustness of the system.

In-Flight Testing
Flight testing under the SENS4ICE project demonstrated the ability of the system to successfully detect icing and differentiate between standard and SLD icing condition in representative flight conditions.

Smart Ice Protection Systems (SIPS)
The AIP3 will support the next generation of Smart Ice Protection Systems (SIPS) by enabling scheduling of the IPS based on the condition encountered. Supporting all-weather operations on aircraft with low power budget availability, supporting the drive towards lower CO2, and enhancing safety.
