AeroTex provides a range of icing design and analysis services based on our in-house tools and extensive industrial experience. Whether you are looking for a partner in a research project, practical advice on how to solve a problem with your product or advice on how to make it ready for certification, AeroTex can help. From accurate icing analysis to novel ideas, AeroTex staff have the expertise you need. On this page you will find a sample of the wide portfolio of design and analysis projects we have been involved in.

Whole aircraft impingement analysis and ice shape/mass calculations
Using our inhouse software tools AeroTex can analyse where and how ice will impinge and grow on your test structure in different weather conditions. With our wealth of experience in the icing field we can advise you on how to build an efficient test plan to determine the safe working envelope for your product.

Design and Optimisation Electrothermal Ice Protection Systems
With funding from the InSPIRe Clean Sky program, AeroTex recently designed and tested a novel, low-power, de-icing system, that removes the requirement for a parting strip. Removing the parting strip and introducing zoning, reduced power consumption to ~25-30kW for a regional aircraft concept (wing and HTP) delivering an effective system at a much reduced environmental cost .

Simulation of Piezoelectric Ice Protection Systems
As part of the GAINS programme, AeroTex developed tools for simulating the performance of Piezoelectric Ice Protection Systems. Utilising laminate approaches we produced a rapid analysis tool that helped the manufacturers optimise the device performance based on adhesion stresses.

Hot air ice protection system assessment and design
Combining the use of AeroTex codes and the staff’s wealth of experience, the team devised the most efficient design for an inlet heater mat and assessed its performance in the wind tunnel.

Icephobic Materials & Ice Characterisation
AeroTex have been involved in several programmes related to icephobic materials and ice characterisation
After designing specialised rigs to go in the NRC AIWT AeroTex staff performed 7 weeks of customer testing to characterise adhesion and cohesion. These results were then used to correlate observed ice failures with recorded flight data

Modelling of ice adhesive and cohesive failure on expulsive ice protection systems
Under the umbrella of the SurfICE program AeroTex has sought to improve modelling of ice adhesive and cohesive failure on expulsive ice protection systems.
We have performed initial characterisation using quasi-static testing and simplified dynamic impulsive testing to produce validation data.

Hybrid ET-EM IPS – Demonstrator
AeroTex staff have designed, built and tested a Hybrid ET-EM Ice Protection System Demonstrator, incorporating a zoned Electrothermal system with scheduled LE actuators.

(SLD) Supercooled Large Droplets visual cues assessment
AeroTex have been involved in several programmes related to observation of SLD and have subsequently developed our own sensor ( The Atmospheric Icing Patch) to detect SLD and differentiate between SLD conditions.

Sensor Placement
AeroTex have developed their software such that we can incorporate inline sensors in the model, allowing us to simulate the effectiveness of different sensor arrays and to advise customers on how to maximise the effectiveness of any ice protect ion system.
